From 16 to 26 October, Mari Lena Rapprich will present and continue her artistic research project «recap + listen» at thealit Arbeitszimmer, St.-Jürgen-Str. 157/159, Bremen. What is this recapitulation and listening all about? Mari Lena Rapprich asks how we listen, what we hear and whose voices are heard, especially in contexts shaped by power dynamics, colonisation, class and discrimination. 

In her words: “recap” means capturing the status quo and contextualizing it in order to make complex relationships and stories tangible, while “listen” emphasizes empathetic and active listening as the basis for understanding [and] community [...]. Listening becomes an instrument of solidarity, recognition, and transformation. It goes without saying that «recap + listen» refers to an ongoing strategy that aims to create a space for negotiation in which different perspectives engage in productive, critical exchange. In short, it is about confronting personal, institutional, and ideological boundaries and allowing oneself to be shaped by the experiences of others. Such encounters and research have resulted in an open collection in which individual elements can enter into various relationships with one another. 

During her residency at thealit Arbeitszimmer, Mari Lena Rapprich will not only evaluate texts and photographs from a recent research trip to Tunisia, but also invite us to a diverse program featuring a book presentation, joint readings, and an open studio day.


  • Education, love, home, faith, money – all of these are places where Sara Mari Blom feels ashamed. For years, she collected places like these until she realized: Almost all of her shameful places have to do with her origins – and with the fact that she has seemingly left them behind. "Where I (shouldn't) be" examines the emotional consequences of so-called educational advancement. The author contrasts this much-touted success story with her experiences of classism and inner turmoil. And she introduces a relentless protagonist that shapes her life: shame.

As a working-class child from a rural area, Sara Mari Blom (*1994) studied costume design in Hanover and integrated design in Bremen. She is an alumna of the 2020/21 Tasawar Curatorial Studios at the Goethe-Institut Tunis and received the IFA scholarship from the 2021 Cross Culture Program. As an artist, writer, and working-class woman, she explores the relationship between class, space, and encounter. Steph Hanna describes the workshop as follows: "How can power be distributed and exercised in a socially just manner within a group? How can we avoid creating a power vacuum that would once again be filled by the most greedy and attention-seeking members of humanity? In a three-day workshop, we will explore this question physically and intellectually. To this end, we will deepen our body awareness and perceive what is happening within us and around us. This simultaneous presence with all our senses is the basis for our joint reading—which will also get us moving again. We think in motion, as a collective body. And in practice, this inevitably leads to further questions, such as:

How do we listen to someone else without prejudice, how do we accept them unconditionally? 

How can we behave inclusively and still feel protected ourselves at the same time?

Somatic bodywork offers several methods for this purpose. It can connect us to an intuitive 'pool of knowledge.' All physical exercises can be designed to be inclusive and individually tailored. For collective exploration, I offer a selection of text excerpts (e.g., by Michel Foucault, Vaclav Havel, Ursula K. Le Guin, Lynn Margulis, Pauline Oliveiros, Arundhati Roy, and Robin Wall Kimmerer, in English and/or German). You are also welcome to bring your own text excerpts that inspire you and fit into this framework. Please also bring comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and something to write with."

They write about their project: "A leitmotif of our work is fluidity—as a metaphor for identities that change shape as bodies move through spaces. We are interested in how individuals interact with specific places and how these experiences influence a sense of place identity." Hydro-Diaspora focuses on identities that flow and transform incessantly. "In our work, all ‘bodies’, human and non-human, are understood as flowing beings, like tributaries emerging from a single stream. We envision a diaspora of beings connected by water and understand identity in its essence as fluid mobility.

As queer migrants in Bremen, we take our own location and experience as both a starting point and a transitional space. The first axis begins in Pohang, Korea—an industrial city and Jaehwa's home—where we interview two undocumented migrants, to make migrant perspectives visible and break through migration discourses that are shaped by Eurocentric frameworks. The second axis connects the waterways of the Han River in Seoul and the Paldang Dam in Gyeonggi Province with the rivers in Bremen. We interweave the flows of water with our bodies and stories. […] Centering the fluidities of queerness, migration, bodies, and water, we seek to create an artistic space that builds new narrative communities and sensorial solidarities.”

Sulme & Jae-Nder Fluid is a Korean artist duo composed of Yeosulme Kang (b. 1995) and Jaehwa Baek (b. 1993), working between Bremen and South Korea.
Yeosulme Kang completed the Diplom and Meisterschüler at Hochschule für Künste Bremen (DE). Jaehwa Baek studied Fine Arts at Hongik University (KR), completed his undergraduate degree at Coventry School of Art & Design (GB), and received an MFA from Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg (DE).

As a duo, they are working in video and installation, especially through illusory imagery and nonlinear spatial arrangements. Their practice centers on fluidity and the notion of “spatial identity,” addressing stories of queer-migrant individuals and spatiality, linguistic experiences as migrants, and the deconstruction of the symbolism embedded in migration-related architectures.


This project is supported by the Senator für Kultur Bremen 2025 (Queer Culture section), Arts Council Korea, and the GyeongGi Art Foundation.


At the new residency with Helena Otto's project: sweet sour taste of nostalgia the focus will be on experiments with taste, memory, and nostalgia: as a longing for home and as home. This is also part of queer recapitulating…

The sweet sour taste of nostalgia project initially plans to engage in dialogue with people who are involved with food in various ways.

Helena Otto will cook with them, pickle fruit and vegetables, and talk about food and its significance, as well as cultural appropriation and cross-border tastes. The resulting sound works will explore how the taste of home/home tastes can be preserved, fermented, and passed on in other ways—within art.

The video essay “Actualizando el feminismo interseccional a la classe hacker” (2022) tells the story of cyberfeminism in three parts (50 min total) and explains why feminist infrastructures and political awareness of “hacking” are more important today than ever! Responsibility is all gender. All FLINTAs* (women, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans and agender persons) and queers who are interested in the intersections of feminism and digital technologies are especially welcome! The video essay will be shown in the original Castellano (Spanish) with English subtitles; the discussion will also be held in English.
