Tsai, I-Chieh

Tsai, I-Chieh (b. 1991, Taipei, TW) is a contemporary artist residing and working in Berlin, Germany.

Her artistic practice critically engages gender issues embedded within patriarchal and capitalist structures in the Sinophone societies. Employing methodologies such as covert participant observation and unstructured interviews, She delves into the loneliness economy and its construction, endeavouring to delineate the contours of gender role dynamics therein, delicate in depicting collective female imagery within this predominantly heterosexual male-centered economy. With this emphasis on feminism, her artistic practice is approached in a feminine way: Her work is characterized by decentralization, a nuanced yet drastic manner, and tactility. She works with multimedia: Her ongoing project is grounded in field research, employs various media including audio-based podcast programs, video installations, and NFTs documenting a year-long virtual persona performance.

In 2020, Tsai completed the Meisterschüler Program at the University of Arts Bremen under the mentorship of Prof. Julika Rudelius, with whom she received the Diplom in 2020. Tsai’s works have been exhibited at Kunstraum Bethanien (2023), Monitoring at the Documentary Film and Video Art Festival Kassel (2022), the Municipal Gallery Bremen(2022), and the European Media Art Festival (2022). She was a recipient of the studio scholarship from Deutsche Bank in 2023. She won the Förderpreis Bremen for Fine Arts in 2022, and her participating project received the Hochschulpreis from HfK Bremen the same year.
