ceramics, glas

Photos: Jiye Lee

This work consists of five ceramics and eight glass objects which can be shown in variable combinations. The main focus is on the ceramic bodies, winding themselves in the face of external forces and inner tension. The glass, in a physical sense solidified liquid, thus seen over millennia as a material in motion, is in relation to the ceramics such as a mediator.

This work is made of local clay from the island of Okinawa and was fired in a traditional kiln, a Noborigama. While collectively fired withwood for 3 days and 3 nights, the flames moves through the chamber, leaving traces of movement and transporting ashes that burn out onthe clay body and present themselves in plays of color and sprinkles.
In Okinawa they say that the wood kiln burned ceramics where made through three entities: first the hand of the ceramicist, secondly thecollective effort, then the fire itself.
