Statistics A spatial evidence production machinery?
The paper investigates some connections between space and statistics. It explores how geography as the science of space works with statistical operations, but also how other disciplines refer the recording and evaluation of data to spaces. What are the effects for the constitution of national formations? Moreover, statistical visualisations in 2D and 3D arrange data in a spatial mode, so that signals and noises are inseparably placed in the same field. Are facts and categories brought into existence through these procedures or are they crossed out? The paper will refer to statistical researches on Eastern Europe as examples for the working of the statistical machinery of evidence production.
